Review featured in Marlborough Town & Country Magazine December 2009
Well, alright, not exactly a new car, rather one that you’d think was new and just driven off the forecourt if you hadn’t seen the number plate….
When Anthony Gannon from Detail asked me if I would like to review his Winter Protection Detail service, initially I hesitated - not because I didn’t want a nice clean car with paintwork protected for the winter, butbecause my car was in such a state I didn’t think he’d be able to get it looking good and I’d have to say soin the magazine. I agreed after he reassured me “the dirtier the better...” with such confidence that I couldn’t say no.
The reason the interior of my car is such a tip is a) I’m lazy about cleaning it, b) our drive is unfinished, which means the car gets a LOT of grit walked into it and c) I have two children, and a dog - all these things added together lead to the before picture shown, which I have only just summoned up the nerve to print here for you all to see.
As well as being a full interior and exterior valet, the Winter Protection Detail seals and polishes the car, meaning that the car is protected from the winter elements for an average of 3 months. The process generally takes 6 - 8 hours, from which you can tell that it isn’t your average valet.
The interior of my car was Anthony’s real challenge, and one he set about with great energy. Patience is obviously one of his virtues as he was meticulous in hoovering up every last bit of grit and grime - as well as cleaning every other part of the interior. This took several hours (luckily for Anthony not every car is as mucky as mine!), then he moved on to the exterior.
First it was degreased, then snow foamed (which draws off the dirt without having to rub the car, thus protecting the paintwork), then rinsed, snow foamed again and hand washed using the two bucket method (a whole other article to be written there…), then power rinsed. After that it was dried with uber towels, and blow dried in places eg door handles, wing mirrors (this is obviously the car equivalent of the beauty salon), before a polymer sealant applied by a dual action polishing machine, followed by a coat of high content carnauba wax. The glass was cleaned and polished inside and out, and the wheels and arches were cleaned and sealed.
At the end of all this, the car looked better than it did when we picked it up new from the showroom - so good in fact it seemed sacrilege to get in it! I couldn’t believe how fantastic the interior looked bearing inmind the state of it first thing in the morning - every square millimetre had been cleaned, even the bits youcan’t see without looking really carefully. The exterior was gleaming, with even the tyres looking like new. Even now, a week later, after the car has been driven on the motorway in the pouring rain, it still looks pretty good - the wax polish means that the dirt and grit from the lorries’ spray rinses off easily.
As a car detailer Anthony deals with all sorts of vehicles, from my run of the mill VW Golf up to vintagecars worth millions, and every one gets the same attention to detail. They say that you get what you payfor, and although the Winter Protection Detail is probably more expensive than your average valet, I would say it is better value. Especially as for a short time it is available to readers at a special offer price of £120 (usually £150).
